The Final Group Stage Matches
The remaining group fixtures, played between June 20 and June 27, settled every qualification picture across all twelve groups.
England topped Group L, though their route there was far from straightforward. After their opening win over Croatia, they were held to a goalless draw by Ghana before closing out the group with a 2-0 win over Panama. Croatia recovered from their Day 9 defeat to beat Panama and Ghana in their final two matches, while Ghana also progressed as one of the strongest third-placed sides in the competition.
Argentina finished top of Group J with a 100% record, completing the group with a 3-1 win over Jordan. Austria and Algeria played out a dramatic 3-3 draw in the final round of matches — enough for both sides to progress, with Austria advancing in second and Algeria sneaking through as one of the best third-placed teams.
Brazil topped Group C comfortably, beating Scotland 3-0 in their final fixture to confirm Scotland's elimination from the tournament. Morocco also progressed from the same group, setting up a Round of 32 meeting with the Netherlands, who topped Group F.
Spain found their form after a stuttering start, beating Saudi Arabia 4-0 before completing the group stage with a win over Uruguay — enough to send both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia out of the tournament. Cape Verde, the smallest nation by population ever to qualify for a World Cup, secured a draw with Uruguay to become the smallest nation in history to reach the knockout rounds.
France finished Group I in dominant fashion, winning all three group games to finish with a goal difference of plus-eight. Norway progressed in second place, while Senegal claimed the second of the tournament's third-place qualification spots from that group with a 5-0 win over Iraq in their final match.
Portugal recovered from their opening draw with DR Congo, beating Uzbekistan 5-0 with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice — his first goals of the tournament. Colombia topped the group following a goalless draw with Portugal, while DR Congo also advanced as one of the tournament's best third-placed sides.

With the group stage complete, the bracket for the knockout rounds was confirmed as follows:
Group A: Mexico, South Africa. Group B: Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Group C: Brazil, Morocco. Group D: USA, Australia, Paraguay. Group E: Germany, Ivory Coast, Ecuador. Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden. Group G: Belgium, Egypt. Group H: Spain, Cape Verde. Group I: France, Norway, Senegal. Group J: Argentina, Austria, Algeria. Group K: Colombia, Portugal, DR Congo. Group L: England, Croatia, Ghana.
From this point on, the tournament became single elimination. Lose, and you're going home.
The Knockouts Begin — Round of 32 Results
The first knockout matches kicked off on June 28, and they delivered drama from the very first whistle.
Canada 1-0 South Africa. The opening knockout match of the tournament was settled by a late goal, sending co-hosts Canada through to face Morocco in the Round of 16.
Brazil 2-1 Japan. A tight, closely fought contest that went the distance, with Brazil edging through late on to set up a Round of 16 meeting with the winner of Ivory Coast vs Norway.
Germany 1-1 Paraguay (Paraguay win 4-3 on penalties). The first genuine shock of the knockout stage. Germany, who had looked one of the strongest sides in the group phase after their 7-1 win over Curaçao, were eliminated on penalties by a Paraguay side that few had tipped to progress this far.
Netherlands 1-1 Morocco (Morocco win 3-2 on penalties). A second penalty shootout, a second major shock. The Netherlands, group winners in Group F, were eliminated by Morocco — who now advance to face Canada in the Round of 16.
By the end of June 29, four of the tournament's group winners and stronger sides — Germany and the Netherlands among them — had already been eliminated, underlining just how unpredictable this expanded format has proven to be.
What's Still to Come
As June drew to a close, several more Round of 32 ties remained on the schedule, including Ivory Coast vs Norway, France vs Sweden, and Mexico vs Ecuador on June 30, with England's first knockout match against DR Congo following on July 1.
The Round of 32 concludes on July 3, with the Round of 16 following from July 4. The tournament now enters its most unforgiving stretch — every match from here is win or go home, all the way to the final on July 19.
The Bigger Picture
Ten days ago, the story of the tournament was Messi's record-equalling hat-trick and the group stage drama. Now, with the knockouts underway, the conversation has shifted entirely. Two of the pre-tournament favourites are already out. Cape Verde — the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup — are still in it. And England, Brazil, Argentina, France and Portugal all remain on course, though none of them have it easy from here.
This is where World Cups are won and lost. The next two weeks promise to be the most compelling stretch of the tournament so far.
